JEOPARDY! Stat Sheet Last Revised: 13 August 1996 Compiled by Brian Dominy (pinball@gate.net) INTRODUCTION This is a collection of statistical data collected over many years of watching the current, syndicated version of "Jeopardy!" In most cases the data collected is guaranteed to be correct, but there is no way I can be sure about everything. If you have any additional information you would like added to this list, or you have evidence to contradict any of the data, please contact me and let me know so that I can make these stats as accurate and complete as possible. (I'm also good at making typos; those count, too.) This is NOT a so-called "FAQ" for the show, as this document is already large enough and another separate document would suit that better. Perhaps, if I get time, that will be the next project. This is NOT leisurely reading material, either; it is a dry reference of more than a decade of the best "Jeopardy!" players and their games. Many of the sections below are incomplete so anything that you can add would be appreciated. Some sections are incomplete for now but are "in progress". Note that my email address has changed; please send mail to pinball@gate.net from now on. The information in this stat sheet is updated at the conclusion of each major tournament. This version contains all totals as of the 1996 International Tournament. The next update is planned for November, 1996 during the 12th Tournament of Champions. All contributors will be given credit in future editions of this stat sheet. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- LEGALESE This document may not be redistributed in modified form or sold in any form without prior consent of the author, that's me. You may redistribute it as-is as much as you want, but you cannot alter any part of the contents or this disclaimer. I have no affiliations with "Jeopardy!" other than as a loyal fan. "Jeopardy!" is produced by Sony/Columbia Tri-Star Television and Merv Griffin Enterprises, and distributed by King World. (Sound familiar?) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- CREDITS Thanks to David Hammett and Robert Slaven for suggestions in the first version of the stat sheet. Thanks to Robert Slaven for an explanation of how the contestants for the 10th Anniversary Tournament were chosen. And thanks to the many former Jeopardy! champions who have posted to alt.tv.game-shows and/or sent me mail over the years describing their experiences. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- TABLE OF CONTENTS The format of this stat sheet is pretty straightforward. In Section A, the names of all Tournament of Champions! participants have been listed, with a little bit of information about them obtained from their TOC tapings. In Sections B-E, you get detailed data on each of the four major tournaments each year: the TOC, the Teen T., the College T., and the Seniors T. Sections F-H are devoted to three special tournaments, Super Jeopardy!, the 10th Anniversary Tournament, and the International Tournament. Finally, Section I. lists all of the TOC participants and their winnings ranked in various ways. (This information, of course, is always changing.) You can use the search capabilities of your mail reader or document browser to go to a particular section. Just search for the section letter and number, followed by a period, at the beginning of a line. A. Tournament of Champions! Competitors List A1. Season #1 (1984-85), 1985 TOC A2. The Players This is a list of all competitors in each year's "Tournament of Champions", grouped according to season/tournament. Until 1994, the TOC was held in November of each year, and the qualification period was the entire previous season. Now it seems that a player can qualify for the TOC up until the tournament is held. One slight problem is that I didn't start keeping records until the third season began in 1986, meaning I missed all of the first Tournament of Champions. I have limited information on that tournament but very little. Help here would be very welcome. If you have any extra details on any of these players that you would like to share, please let me know. Also, if you ARE any of these players, I'd love to talk with you, and your e-mail address will be kept private if you so desire, or publicized here for the world to see (again) if you want that instead. Tournament of Champions competitors include all five-game winners, all special tournament winners (teens, college students, and seniors), and the highest winning four-game winners to round out each year's group of 15. Only once has a three-game winner made it to the tournament: season 9's David Tiemann. This section is more of an introduction to the players than it is a statistical junkyard. I've listed each player, the original winnings before entering the Tournament of Champions, and the occupation/hometown bit announced during their tournament appearance. Many of these people have gone on to other things and other places now, and some of them even drop by on the Internet occasionally to talk about their experiences. For more detailed stats on each player, check out the current rankings given at the end of this stat sheet in section I. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- A1. The Tournaments of Champions The next few sections list all the Jeopardy! tournaments that have been held, including the Tournaments of Champions, the Teen Tournaments, the Seniors Tournaments, the College Tournaments, the 10th Anniversary Tournament, and Super Jeopardy! Note that as of late my interest in some of the tournaments has dwindled (except for the TOC), so some of the information is lacking. For all sections, the scores of most matches are given as three figures: the score going into Final Jeopardy!, the signed Final Jeopardy! wager indicating money gained or lost during Final Jeopardy!, and the final score. For some matches, there is an additional figure given first followed by a comma; this is the player's score at the end of the Jeopardy! round. For two-day total-point matches, each day's score is listed on a separate line, with the two-day total listed last. In some cases, exact figures were not available, so I have just indicated the winner of the match by (WIN). The wild card participants of each tournament are identified in the quarterfinal listings by (WC). The Tournament of Champions is held each November featuring all the previous season's five-time winners, the special tournament winners, and the highest four-time winners to round out the field of 15. First place pays out $100,000. Since all of these players have already been mentioned in the previous section, only last names are given here. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- B1. 1985 Tournament of Champions I didn't get this one on tape, even though I remember watching it. (I was not into the show at the time; I was only in fifth grade.) The finalists were Steve Rogitz and Bruce Fauman; the winner was Jerry Frankel. Steve and Bruce appeared on Super Jeopardy!; Jerry did not. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- B2. 1986 Tournament of Champions QUARTERFINALS Rosenberg 9400 -1800 7600 (WIN) Goldbart 5695 -695 5000 (WC) Green 3300 -3300 0 Rouffa 5800 +2001 7801 (WIN) Shinkman 7800 -0 7800 (WC) Eisenstat 1200 +1200 2400 Burgo 8100 +2000 10100 (WIN) Leinwand 1600 -600 1000 Arbit 8300 -700 7600 (WC) Giardina 2200 +2200 4400 (WIN) Becker 3200 -1300 1900 Schoeck 2000 +1900 3900 Forrest 11000 -1000 10000 (WIN) Tonti 2600 -2600 0 Palmer 3000 +3000 6000 (WC) SEMIFINALS Burgo 2800 -2800 0 Shinkman 6000 -1801 4199 Palmer 3900 -3900 0 Forrest 10800 +200 11000 Rosenberg 1800 -700 1100 Giardina 4400 -4400 0 Rouffa 7300 +6700 14000 Arbit 6700 +5400 12100 Goldbart (did not play Final Jeopardy!) The Teen Tournaments The first Teen Tournament was held in February, 1987, and has been held in that month every year since. The Seniors Tournaments The same year the Teen T. debuted, so did this one. I believe it originally aired in April that year, but now the tournament is aired at the end of the regular season in June/July. (It is the only tournament not to be repeated during the summer months.) The same rules given above for the Teen Tournament apply here. The 1996 Seniors Tournament was backed up to December 1995 in order to make way for the International Tournament to be aired on account of the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. To qualify for this tournament, you must be age 50 or older. Unfortunately, I lost interest in this tournament pretty quickly, so I stopped watching it altogether. If anyone has the information, I'll be glad to include it here. I've listed the winners of each of the tournaments below instead. D1. 1987 Seniors Tournament Zeke Sevilla, Jr., $25,000 D2. 1988 Seniors Tournament Peggy Kennedy, $25,000 D3. 1989 Seniors Tournament Ouida Rellstab, $25,000 D4. 1990 Seniors Tournament George Sewell, $25,000 D5. 1991 Seniors Tournament Lou Pryor, $26,601 D6. 1992 Seniors Tournament Leonard Schmidt, $25,000 D7. 1993 Seniors Tournament Marilyn Kneeland, $25,000 D8. 1994 Seniors Tournament Bart Thomas, $25,000 D9. 1995 Seniors Tournament Aaron Klein, $25,000 D10. 1995-96 Seniors Tournament David Cuneo, $28,000 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- E. The College Tournaments Two years after the Teen and Seniors tournaments were introduced, this one was added. It originally aired at the end of the season, but switched places with the Seniors tournament sometime a few years ago and now shows in April. I'm not certain on all the qualifications for this one, but I think you have to be a full-time undergraduate student at a college or university and at least 18 years of age. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- E1. 1989 College Tournament This tournament was won by Michael Thayer, a student at Rutgers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- E2. 1990 College Tournament Won by Tom Cubbage, a student at SMU (?). ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- E3. 1991 College Tournament QUARTERFINALS David Morris Jean O'Hearn Eric Przybylko Kimberly Bartlett Tim Lakin Maureen McIvor Kelly Barbour Michael Cantor Franco Recchia Maureen Duffy Andre Duvoisin Holly McCann Katie Czukas Mike Furlanetto Scott Gillispie SEMIFINALS Czukas 3500 +3498 6998 Cantor 5700 -2000 3700 Duvoisin 13900 +0 13900 Lakin 10800 +10 10810 Barbour 200 +200 400 Morris 3300 -1700 1600 Gillispie 11400 +9900 21300 Bartlett 3200 +3200 6400 Recchia 10600 -10600 0 FINALS Gillispie 13300 +3300 16600 13300 -2500 10800 27400 Duvoisin 6600 -5000 1600 12800 -3800 9000 10600 Lakin 9600 -4600 5000 4600 -3000 1600 6600 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- E4. 1992 College Tournament QUARTERFINALS Margaret Bickers 7800 -2000 5800 Ken Kansa 10000 +1000 11000 (WC) Chris Montplaisir 6000 +5000 11000 (WIN)* Ernst Bell 8800 +5401 14201 (WIN) Glen Cotton 7100 +2100 9200 (WC) Tricia Johnson 2800 -2800 0 Amy Cheek 6500 +6000 12500 (WIN) Dave Ellis 6900 -6201 699 Hannah Stires 4300 -4300 0 Katherine Bryant 8100 -4000 4100 Kyle Graham 7000 +7000 14000 Hans Hornstein 7600 -2000 5600 Billy Baxter 7900 +3500 11400 (WC) Nick Jungman 9700 -1800 7900 (WC) Stephanie Leveene 6900 +6000 12900 (WIN) * Being tied at the end of Final Jeopardy!, Chris won on the tie-breaker. The 1990 Super Jeopardy! Tournament This tournament was a 13-week affair broadcast Saturdays at 8pm on ABC during the summer of 1990. It featured 36 former players, all of whom reached at least the semifinals of the TOC, or who were top players from the previous season (who had not yet been in a TOC). Also one participant, Burns Cameron, was a contestant from the original Jeopardy! back in 1966. (Note that this was very early during the run of that particular version of the show.) There were 9 quarterfinals of 4 players each; these produced 9 winners that moved on to the semifinals, where 3 finalists were determined. Quarterfinalists received $5,000; semifinalists won $10,000; third place won $25,000; second place won $50,000; and first place won $250,000. Also, none of the games were played using dollar amounts but instead points. Round one points ranged from 200-1000, and round two points ranged from 500-2500. Eliminating the dollar values really just confused Alex, and the score inflation didn't seem to have any effects other than to make the players look better on the surface and make the first round completely meaningless. There were 9 competitors, one from each of the previous 9 seasons. The 9th season representative was Tom Nosek, the TOC winner. The other reps were chosen randomly, all of them at least semifinalists from their respective TOC appearance. The 1996 International Tournament In honor of the Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta, an International Tournament was held during the week preceeding the opening ceremonies. On Monday through Wednesday, three semifinal games were played, with the losers receiving $5,000 each; and the three finalists returned on Thursday to play for the championship and $25,000. A regular-season game was played on Friday, the day the Games began. The nine contestants represented nine different countries each with their own version of "Jeopardy!", including the U.S., represented by the most recent TOC winner Ryan Holznagel. SEMIFINALS Elena ? Current Rankings The following lists are of all known Tournament of Champions participants, ranked according to various winnings. For the regular winnings, only winnings during a contestant's regular competitions are included. Teen, College, and Seniors tournament participants listed here are sorted by their tournament winnings. For the syndicated winnings, Tournament of Champions winnings have been added. Although the 10th Anniversary Tournament was also syndicated, I have excluded those winnings from this list because the method used to select those contestants involved a high degree of randomness, and I also didn't include Ryan Holznagel's International Tournament appearance here, either. For the total winnings, 10th Anniversary winnings and Super Jeopardy! winnings have been included with the above; this includes everything but the parting gifts and the taxes. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- H1. Regular Winnings Note that there is one less name here than in the other lists, because I do not have the regular winnings for the first Tournament of Champions winner, Jerry Frankel. A person's name is not added to this list until he/she has qualified for the Tournament of Champions. Teen, College, and Seniors champs are usually added immediately; 5-time champions I happen to see are added; most of the changes are made when the TOC airs, though. 1 Frank Spangenberg 102,597 2 Jerome Vered 96,801 3 David Siegel 86,200 4 John Kelly 84,701 5 Steve Chernicoff 83,902 6 Mark Born 82,899 7 Bob Blake 82,501 8 John Cuthbertson 82,400 9 Bruce Ikawa 80,699 10 Steve Newman 75,502 11 Leszek Pawlowicz 75,400 12 Frank Epstein 73,400 13 Richard Kaplan 73,202 14 Amy Fine 72,803 15 Chuck Forrest 72,800 16 Bill Pitassy 72,702 17 Paul Thompson 72,199 18 Lynne Wexler 70,351 19 India Cooper 68,400 20 Ed Schiffer 65,903 21 Bev Schwartzberg 65,900 22 Tom Nosek 65,640 23 Diane Siegel 65,479 24 Eric Terzuolo 64,302 25 Leslie Miller 64,300 26 Dennis Donohue 64,298 27 Bruce Naegeli 64,200 28 Tom Halpern 63,602 29 Bruce Simmons 63,599 30 Walt Senterfitt 63,101 31 Jean Grewe 62,801 32 Brian Wangsgard 62,398 33 Brian Moore 62,002 34 John Ryan 61,800 35 Jonathan Jacobs 61,200 36 Larry McKnight 60,901 37 Jonathan Groff 60,500 38 Phil Yellman 60,400 39 Sara Cox 60,201 40 Al Lin 58,903 41 Leah Greenwald 58,802 42 Jeff Richmond 58,302 43 Dave Willis 58,001 44 Eugene Finerman 57,902 45 Tom Nichols 57,680 46 Lois Kurowski 57,500 47 Roy Holliday 57,200 48 Isaac Segal 56,700 49 Leslie Frates 56,099 50 Richard Neale 56,000 51 Steven Popper 55,600 52 Harvey Becker 55,400 53 John LeDonne 55,200 54 Bruce Seymour 54,989 55 Dave Traini 54,502 56 Erik Larsen 54,400 57 Bruce Borchardt 54,099 58 Sandra Gore 53,507 59 Robert Slaven 53,202 60 Elaine Zollner 52,800 61 Bruce Fauman 52,798 62 Fred Frank 52,699 63 Ron Black 52,401 64 Michael Rankins 52,098 65 Barbara Ann Eddy 52,000 66 Steve Robin 51,901 67 Mark Pestronk 51,698 68 Kurt Bray 51,100 69 Doug Molitor 51,001 70 Stephen Lebowitz 50,900 71 David Vanderbush 50,800 72 Joel Sacks 50,652 73 Linda Roberts 50,404 74 Mark Lowenthal 49,901 75 Kate Waits 49,804 76 Jay Rosenberg 49,600 77 Ryan Holznagel 49,413 78 Ron Trigueiro 49,400 79 Jim Scott 49,300 80 Dan Katz 48,803 81 Steve Berman 48,800 82 Elise Beraru 48,350 83 David Hillinck 47,401 84 Yael Sofaer 47,401 85 Bob Verini 46,802 86 Paul Rouffa 46,100 87 John Podhoretz 45,600 88 John McKeon 44,901 89 Bruce Cox 44,900 90 Gordon Wean 44,895 91 Jeff Bandman 44,501 92 Kirk Ditzler 43,801 93 Mark Leinwand 43,700 94 Len Krisak 43,399 95 Debby Arnold 43,103 96 Mark McDermott 42,880 97 Lisa Guay 42,600 98 Matt Zielenski 42,300 99 Keith Bell 41,952 100 Jim Morgan 41,899 101 Jim Thompkins-McLean 41,002 102 Beryl Arbit 41,001 103 Rich Lerner 40,790 104 Keith Walker 40,700 105 Cigus Vanni 40,400 106 Richard Cordray 40,303 107 Richard Perez-Pena 40,300 108 Jim Vercolen 40,200 109 Linda Sheppard 39,700 110 Liz Caccese 39,500 111 Marvin Shinkman 39,203 112 Jonathan Fellows 39,201 113 Cathy Boggs 39,200 114 David Tiemann 37,999 115 Rachael Schwartz 37,499 116 Eric Berman 37,101 117 Peggi Malys 36,800 118 Steve Rogitz 36,499 119 Chris Shea 35,202 120 Lionel Goldbart 34,997 121 Andrew Bernknopf 34,200 122 Shane Whitlock 32,800 123 Jack Mahoney 32,404 124 Gary Giardina 32,330 125 Roger Storm 31,200 126 Amanda Goad 31,200 127 Frank Hughes 30,900 128 Matt Morris 29,601 129 Fraser Woodford 28,999 130 Guy Tonti 28,800 131 Eric Newhouse 28,100 132 David Cuneo 28,000 133 Phoebe Juel 28,000 134 Scott Gillispie 27,400 135 Lou Pryor 26,601 136 Tom Cubbage 26,600 137 Billy Baxter 26,200 138 Donald Burgo 26,180 139 Jared Eisenstat 26,098 140 Jamie Weiss 26,000 141 Danny Green 26,000 142 Jeff Stewart 25,000 143 Marilyn Kneeland 25,000 144 Ouida Rellstab 25,000 145 Leonard Schmidt 25,000 146 April McManus 25,000 147 Peggy Kennedy 25,000 148 Michael Galvin 25,000 149 Bart Thomas 25,000 150 Andy Westney 25,000 151 Michael Thayer 25,000 152 George Sewell 25,000 153 Zeke Sevilla, Jr. 25,000 154 Michael Block 25,000 155 Ben Lyon 25,000 156 Aaron Klein 25,000 157 Eric Schoeck 21,499 158 Gary Palmer 18,400 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- H2.
